- Plan your route and camping spots
- Prepare any questions for the owner
- Arrange any additional items you might need for your trip
What should I pack for my RV trip?
Check the RV listing for what's included. Generally, you'll need:

- Bedding (unless provided by the owner)
- Towels
- Cooking utensils and dishes (if not provided)
- Food and drinks
- Personal items and clothing
- Cables to connect phone to radio/GPS

Do I need to bring my own linens and towels?
This varies by RV. Check the listing or ask the owner. Some provide linens and towels, others require you to bring your own.
Can I pick up the RV earlier than the stated time?
Pick-up times are set by the owner. If you need an earlier pick-up, message the owner to see if it's possible. Keep in mind that they might charge an additional fee for early pick-up.
How do I contact the owner to arrange pick-up?
Use the Camplify messaging system to coordinate pick-up details with the owner. It's a good idea to confirm the pick-up time and location a day or two before your hire starts.
During your Trip
What should I do if I have a problem during my hire?
If you encounter any issues:
- For mechanical problems, refer to the Breakdown Policy
- For other issues, contact the owner first
- If the problem isn't resolved within 12 hours, contact Camplify support. Find more information in our Camplify Dispute Resolution.
Can I take the RV to a different location than originally planned?
You should stick to the agreed route and locations. If you need to change your plans, contact the owner through Camplify to get their approval first. More information is given in rules 52 and 53 in our Camplify Hirer Rules document.
What happens if I get a traffic or parking fine during my hire?
You're responsible for any fines incurred during your hire. If a fine is issued, inform the owner and Camplify, and arrange to pay it promptly.
Can I smoke in the RV?
Most RVs are non-smoking. Check the RV listing for the specific smoking policy. If you smoke in a non-smoking RV, you may incur additional cleaning charges.
After your Trip
What if I need to end my hire early?
If you need to end your hire early, contact the owner through the Camplify messaging system. Keep in mind that you may not be eligible for a refund for unused days.
What do I need to do before returning the RV?
Before returning the RV:
- Clean the interior (unless you've paid for a cleaning service)
- Empty waste tanks
- Refuel to the agreed level
- Refill LPG bottle as Agreed
- Remove any food and rubbish
- Remove all your personal belongings
- Check you haven't left anything behind
Find more details in our Camplify Hirer Rules.
What happens if I return the RV late?
Late returns can disrupt the owner's schedule and may incur additional charges. Always aim to return the RV at the agreed time. If you're running late, contact the owner as soon as possible.
Do I need to clean the RV before returning it?
Unless you've paid for a cleaning service, you should return the RV in the same clean condition you received it. This usually means sweeping, wiping surfaces, removing rubbish, and emptying the toilet cassette, unless you have paid for the ‘clean the toilet’ service as an additional product.
What if I've accidentally damaged something in the RV?
If you've caused any damage, inform the owner during the return process. After your trip, the owner will report any damages or extra charges in the Post-Hire Checklist, and while you can resolve issues privately with the owner, choosing this option means Camplify won't be able to assist in the process.
How does the final inspection work?
The owner will inspect the RV upon return. They'll check its condition, fuel level, and cleanliness. It's best if you're present for this inspection so you can discuss any issues directly. The owner will inspect the RV upon return, or in the daylight if you have returned the van at night time.
Can I leave a review for the owner?
Yes, and we encourage you to do so! After your hire, you'll have the opportunity to rate your experience and leave a review. Your feedback helps other hirers and allows owners to improve their service. Be honest but fair in your review, focusing on the aspects of the hire that would be helpful for future hirers to know. Find more information in the Camplify Dispute Resolution Policy.
What if I left something in the RV?
If you realise you've left something behind, contact the owner through the Camplify messaging system as soon as possible. Most owners are happy to help reunite you with your belongings, though you might need to cover any postage costs.
How long do I have to report any issues after my hire?
It's best to report any issues immediately during the final inspection. However, if you notice something after you've left, you should report it to Camplify within 48 hours of the end of your hire.
Can I book the same RV again for my next trip?
Absolutely! If you've had a great experience, you can easily book the same RV for your next adventure. Just search for the RV on Camplify or check your previous bookings in your account.
Technical Aspects of RVs
How do I empty the waste tanks?
The process for emptying waste tanks can vary between RVs. The owner should provide instructions during the handover. If you're unsure, don't hesitate to ask for a demonstration or detailed instructions.
What kind of fuel do RVs use?
This varies depending on the RV. Most motorhomes and campervans run on diesel or petrol. Always confirm the correct fuel type with the owner during the handover to avoid costly mistakes.
How do I connect to campsite power?
Most RVs come with a power cord for connecting to campsite electricity. The owner should show you how to do this during the handover. Remember to always follow proper safety procedures when dealing with electrical connections.
What do I do if the gas runs out?
If the gas runs out during your hire, contact the owner for guidance. Some owners will advise you on where to refill the gas, while others might prefer to handle it themselves. Never attempt to refill or change gas bottles unless you've been specifically instructed on how to do so safely.
How do I operate the water system?
Water systems can vary between RVs. The owner should provide a thorough explanation during the handover. This usually involves understanding how to fill the freshwater tank, use the taps and shower, and manage grey water. If you're unsure about anything, ask the owner for a demonstration.
Travelling with Others
Can I add extra drivers to my booking?
Yes, you can add extra drivers to your booking. They'll need to meet the same licence and age requirements as the main driver. You can usually add extra drivers during the booking process or by contacting Camplify support.
Are child seats available for RVs?
Some RVs come with child seats, while for others, you might need to bring your own. Always check the RV listing or ask the owner about child seat availability and compatibility. Remember, safety is paramount when travelling with children.
Are child restraints a legal requirement?
In New Zealand, it is a legal requirement for children under 7 years of age to be secured in an approved child restraint. Approved child restraints include:
-
infant restraints for young babies (often called baby capsules)
-
restraints for older babies, toddlers and preschool children (often called car seats)
-
booster seats for preschool and school-aged children
-
child safety harnesses (used with or without a booster seat) for preschool and school-aged children.
While it is not illegal for a child in a restraint to travel in the front passenger seat, we strongly recommend that children be seated and secured in the back of the vehicle.
Which type of child restraint should be used?
When booking a motorhome or campervan please refer to the below general guidelines. Age and weight limits can vary between make and model of child restraint.
Rear-Facing Baby Seat:
- Suitable for babies up to 9kg and under 6 months old.
- Rear-facing infant seats are the safest option for babies. These seats must be installed in vehicles with pre-installed anchor points. Please check with the vehicle owner before booking.
Forward-Facing Baby Seat:
- Suitable for children weighing 9-18kg, over 6 months and under 5 years old.
- If your Forward-facing seat requires anchor points please check with the vehicle owner prior to booking.
Booster Child Seat:
- Suitable for children weighing 14-26kg, over 5 years up to 7 years old.
- Booster seats use the adult seat belt (no anchor points needed) and should only be used in forward-facing seats.
- Child must reach any minimum shoulder height for the booster seat (set by manufacturer)
Important Notes:
- We recommend confirming the correct car seats/restraints for your family and discussing this with the vehicle owner prior to booking
- Front seats in all vehicles do not have anchor points and should not accommodate children under seven years old.
- Child or booster seats are not allowed in rear-facing seats of any six-berth vehicle. (This includes the Dinette Area)
- All passengers must travel in secured seat belts. It is illegal for passengers to lie down on beds or walk around motorhomes whilst moving.
- It is the hirers responsibility to fit the child restraints in the vehicle on arrival.
Child Restraints and Car Seats can be hired through online and local businesses in New Zealand with delivery options available. This information is provided as a general guide, please review NZTA Guidelines for full details.
Can I bring my pet on my RV holiday?
Some RVs are pet-friendly, while others are not. Use the pet-friendly filter when searching, and always confirm with the owner before booking if you plan to bring a pet. Be prepared for additional cleaning fees or deposits for pet-friendly hires.
Does my pet need to be restrained in an RV?
If your pet is joining you for the journey they will need to be in a secure anchored carrier or a harness. This prevents pets from roaming the vehicle while moving and potentially injury if the vehicle suddenly stops.
How many people can sleep in an RV?
The sleeping capacity varies greatly between RVs. Check the RV listing for the stated capacity, and don't exceed this number. Remember that the number of seatbelts might be different from the sleeping capacity.
Can I have visitors at my campsite?
This depends on the campsite rules and your agreement with the owner. Some owners might not allow additional visitors due to insurance reasons. Always check with the owner and respect the agreed-upon terms of your hire.

How do I use the RV's entertainment system?
Entertainment systems vary between RVs. The owner should provide instructions during the handover. If you're unsure about anything, don't hesitate to ask for a demonstration or detailed instructions.
Is there a GPS or navigation system included?
Some RVs come with built-in GPS systems, while others don't. Check the RV listing or ask the owner. If a GPS isn't provided, consider bringing your own or using a smartphone app for navigation.
What if the RV has a dash cam or GPS tracker?
Some owners use dash cams or GPS trackers in their RVs for security purposes. This should be disclosed in the RV listing. If you have concerns about privacy, discuss these with the owner before booking. Remember, by booking an RV with these devices, you're consenting to their use during your hire.
Remember, if you have any questions that aren't covered here, don't hesitate to ask the owner or contact Camplify support. We're here to help ensure you have a fantastic RV adventure!
